My Top 10 Most Anticipated Books of 2023

One of my goals of the year is to make some changes to my reading. Normally I’m a mood buyer with a tendency to only get books in the same Genre – fantasy. But not this year! Besides diversifying my reading, I will also make a better effort of not buying books impulsively. Although this list includes a few insta-buy authors and genres that I have read before, I’m looking forward to getting a little out the box with a few of these reads.

Without further ado, here are my top 10 most anticipated reads of 2023:

  1. Immortal Longings by Chloe Gong

#1 New York Times bestselling YA author Chloe Gong’s adult epic fantasy debut, inspired by Shakespeare’s Antony and Cleopatra, is a fiery collision of power plays, spilled blood, and romance amidst a set of deadly games.

If you know me, you know I’m a MAJOR fan of Chloe Gong and, while I wasn’t excited about Foul Lady Fortune, THIS is the story I’ve been waiting for. I’ve really gotten into retellings since reading The Song of Achilles in 2021 so this is right up my alley and my most anticipated release of 2023. I will be buying this on pub day/will try my best to get it signed by Chloe.

Expected publication July 25, 2023

  1. Happy Place by Emily Henry

A couple who broke up months ago make a pact to pretend to still be together for their annual weeklong vacation with their best friends in this glittering and wise new novel from #1 New York Times bestselling author Emily Henry.

Emily Henry is one of my insta-buy authors so I’m super excited to read this one! I’ve loved everything she’s published so far and I’m sure this won’t be any different – I love a good fake relationship and I’m sure the one-bed trope will be featured as well.

Expected publication April 25, 2023

  1. Yellowface by R.F. Kuang

What’s the harm in a pseudonym? New York Times bestselling sensation Juniper Song is not who she says she is, she didn’t write the book she claims she wrote, and she is most certainly not Asian American–in this chilling and hilariously cutting novel from R. F. Kuang in the vein of White Ivy and The Other Black Girl.

I’ve heard a LOT of great things about R.F.Kuang based on The Poppy War and Babel (both on my TBR) so I’m really excited for this to drop. I want to branch away from fantasy novels this year so this will be a great book for me to get into.

Expected publication May 16, 2023

  1. Homebodies by Tembe Denton-Hurst

Urgent, propulsive, and strikingly insightful, Homebodies is a thrilling debut novel about a young Black writer whose world is turned upside down when she loses her coveted job in media and her searing manifesto about racism in the industry goes viral.

If you know me, you know why this book ranks so high on this list. While Yellowface comes in at #3, Homebodies is truly my most anticipated non-fantasy book of 2023 and I’ve already preordered this. As a Black writer who also works in the media industry, this book practically screams at me! I know I’ll be talking about this one for months to come.

Expected publication May 2, 2023

  1. Big Swiss by Jen Beagin

A brilliantly original and funny novel about a sex therapist’s transcriptionist who falls in love with a client while listening to her sessions. When they accidentally meet in real life, an explosive affair ensues.

I don’t have too much to say about this, other than this is perhaps my second-most highly anticipated book of 2023. In 2021 I read My Year of Rest and Relaxation by Ottessa Moshfegh and, in 2022, I read Luster by Raven Leilani-both books changed my life and I’ve recommended them to anyone who asks what’s the best book I’ve read recently. Needless to say, I’m a big fan of books with slightly unhinged women as their main characters. Not to mention, the adaptation of this book is already in the words and Jodie Comer is lined up to play the MC??? It’s a recipe for my own happiness.

Expected publication February 7, 2023

  1. Last Violent Call by Chloe Gong

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Chloe Gong comes two captivating new novellas surrounding the events of Foul Lady Fortune!

Another one by Chloe Gong! These two novellas features 4 characters from her original duology These Violent Delights and Our Violent Ends. I won’t include any spoilers about who is in these novellas, just in case you aren’t up to speed, but please know this is a pub day buy as well.

Expected publication February 28, 2023

  1. Highly Suspicious and Unfairly Cute by Talia Hibbert

From the New York Times bestselling author of the Brown Sisters trilogy, comes a laugh-out-loud story about a quirky content creator and a clean-cut athlete testing their abilities to survive the great outdoors–and each other.

I only read the first book of the Brown Sisters trilogy but it was a joy to read and the other two have been on my TBR for a year. I love books that scream diversity-especially when the main characters are Black- and Talia Hibbert has been delivering.

  1. Spare by Harry Windsor

For the first time, Prince Harry tells his own story, chronicling his journey with raw, unflinching honesty. A landmark publication, Spare is full of insight, revelation, self-examination, and hard-won wisdom about the eternal power of love over grief.

While I’m not the biggest fan of the royal family, I love that Prince Harry is shaking the table by talking about so many things that I’m sure more than a handful of people would rather be kept quiet. While I’m not running to my nearest bookstore to pick up a copy of this one, I am looking forward to giving it a shot sometime this year.

Expected publication January 10, 2023

  1. Really Good, Actually by Monica Heisey

A hilarious and painfully relatable debut novel about one woman’s messy search for joy and meaning in the wake of an unexpected breakup, from comedian, essayist, and award-winning screenwriter Monica Heisey

There’s not really too much to say about why this book interests me. As a perfectionist who lives in constant fear of the ominous “what can go wrong”, I’m loving books where the main character is in their 20’s and falling apart. Reading about people going through the worst and still finding a way to put themselves together in a way that seems feasible to me (hello group chats) is just perfect for my 23-year-old heart.

Expected publication January 17, 2023

  1. Y/N by Esther Yi

Surreal, hilarious, and shrewdly poignant—a novel about a Korean American woman living in Berlin whose obsession with a K-pop idol sends her to Seoul on a journey of literary self-destruction.

Now, this book is no where near my usual cup of tea-especially because I’ve never been a K-pop fan- but there’s a reason it caught my eye: I grew up during Tumblr’s peak era. If you’re a fellow Tumblr veteran, the term “y/n” will most likely speak to you and bring back plenty of memories of your time deeply engrossed in a fandom. While this book doesn’t speak to who I am now, it certainly speaks to a younger version of myself so I am very excited to give this a try.

Expected publication March 21, 2023

While some of these books have already arrived to readers’ homes, I’ve got quite a few books to get through on my TBR before I can get to some new ones. Stay tuned throughout 2023 for my reviews on these 10 books! And, if you’re interested in knowing just how ambitious my 2023 TBR is, stop by again next week for more content!
